A new TV, a PS5, or a gaming monitor is ready – but when it comes to the cable, the question quickly arises: HDMI 2.0 or 2.1? The short answer is: For many applications, HDMI 2.0 is perfectly sufficient. If you want to game in 4K at 120 Hz, optimally use modern consoles, or be prepared for upcoming devices, choose HDMI 2.1 or a suitable Ultra-High-Speed HDMI cable.

It's not about simply buying the most expensive cable. It's about what your TV, console, PC, or soundbar can actually do and what you use them for. This way, you avoid unnecessary expenses and still get a picture that matches your device.

HDMI 2.0 or 2.1: The Difference in Everyday Use

HDMI is the connection between the image source and the screen. It transmits video, audio, and, depending on the device, control commands. HDMI 2.0 offers a maximum data rate of 18 Gbit/s. This is sufficient for 4K resolution at up to 60 frames per second, i.e., 4K at 60 Hz. For streaming, movies, series, most TV receivers, and many regular console games, this is a strong and common solution.

HDMI 2.1 increases the possible data rate to up to 48 Gbit/s. This allows for higher frame rates, such as 4K at 120 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz. The difference is particularly noticeable in fast-paced gaming: movements appear smoother, controls can react more directly, and compatible games benefit from modern features like VRR and ALLM.

However, an HDMI 2.1 cable alone will not produce a 120 Hz picture on a 60 Hz TV. The source, the TV's port, and the screen must also support this function. A cable cannot replace missing technology in the device.

For Which Devices Is HDMI 2.0 Sufficient?

HDMI 2.0 is not an outdated stopgap solution. It is exactly right for many households. If you mainly use a TV for Netflix, YouTube, Blu-rays, or regular television, you will see no disadvantage with a good cable. Most content is already available in 4K at 24, 30, or 60 frames per second.

Even with a PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, or an older gaming PC, HDMI 2.0 is usually the right choice. You get 4K at 60 Hz, HDR with compatible devices, and a reliable connection. If you only play occasionally or don't have a TV with a 120 Hz panel, you don't need to switch to HDMI 2.1 just for a new cable.

Something similar applies to workplaces: a 4K monitor with 60 Hz for office, videos, image editing, or home office works excellently via HDMI 2.0. Texts are sharp, tables are easy to read, and video conferences run without restriction. More frame rate is pleasant but not necessary for every task.

When HDMI 2.1 Is the Better Choice

HDMI 2.1 is worthwhile if you can truly utilize the additional capabilities. This primarily applies to current consoles like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, as well as powerful gaming PCs. A prerequisite is a TV or monitor with an HDMI 2.1 port and 120 Hz support.

In fast-paced games like racing games, shooters, or sports games, 120 Hz is significantly more enjoyable than 60 Hz. The image appears calmer, fast camera pans remain clearer, and inputs often feel more immediate. However, whether a particular game actually supports 4K at 120 Hz depends on the game and the selected graphics options. Often, you have to choose between maximum resolution and a particularly high frame rate.

HDMI 2.1 is also useful for a new 4K 120 Hz monitor. If you connect a powerful PC, you'll want to utilize the monitor's refresh rate. For 8K, HDMI 2.1 is also necessary, although 8K is only a practical topic for a few buyers in everyday private use so far.

These Features Make the Difference in Gaming

HDMI 2.1 is not just about more resolution. Some features noticeably improve the user experience if all involved devices support them.

VRR stands for Variable Refresh Rate. The screen adjusts its refresh rate to the console or PC. This can reduce screen tearing that occurs with fluctuating performance.

ALLM stands for Auto Low Latency Mode. The TV detects a suitable game source and automatically switches to a mode with low input lag. You don't have to manually search for the Game Mode every time.

eARC is interesting for home theater enthusiasts. It allows a TV to return high-quality audio formats to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver. Important: eARC is not automatically available on every HDMI 2.1 port. A look at the technical data of the TV and soundbar prevents disappointment.

HDR provides stronger contrasts and more visible details in bright and dark image areas. HDR is not exclusively reserved for HDMI 2.1. HDMI 2.0 can also transmit HDR. Whether HDR looks good depends more on the TV's quality than on the HDMI version alone.

Not Every "HDMI 2.1 Cable" Is Correctly Labeled

Cables are often described as HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1 cables in retail. Strictly speaking, the official cable designations are more important than this simplified specification. HDMI versions primarily refer to the ports and capabilities of the devices.

For 4K at 60 Hz, you should opt for a Premium High Speed HDMI cable. This cable is designed for the necessary bandwidth up to 18 Gbit/s and is suitable for typical 4K TVs, streaming devices, and older consoles.

For 4K at 120 Hz, VRR, or 8K, you need an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. It is designed for up to 48 Gbit/s. Pay attention to this clear labeling instead of just being guided by big promises on the packaging. An inexpensive, clearly specified cable is more sensible than an overpriced model with vague information.

Cable length also plays a role. For short distances from the TV to the console or soundbar, one to two meters are usually uncomplicated. For longer distances, signal quality can depend more on the cable. Therefore, plan only as much length as truly needed and avoid tight kinks behind the TV furniture.

How to Check Your Connections Before Buying

First, look at the back or the product description of your TV. Many devices have multiple HDMI ports, but not all of them offer the same features. It may be that only one or two ports support 4K at 120 Hz. Sometimes, the extended HDMI option also needs to be activated in the settings menu.

Then, check the source. A PS5 or Xbox Series X can use HDMI 2.1 features, but the connected game must offer the appropriate mode. For a PC, the graphics card, drivers, and the monitor's port also matter. A modern graphics card is of little use if the monitor only accepts HDMI 2.0.

Finally, the cable. For a normal 4K 60 Hz connection, use Premium High Speed. For a new console on a 120 Hz TV or for a gaming PC on a fast 4K monitor, use Ultra High Speed. This simple sequence saves a lot of guesswork.

Typical Errors in HDMI Connections

If no picture suddenly appears, 120 Hz is not selectable, or the connection briefly drops out, the cable is not automatically defective. Often, it is not fully plugged into the port, the wrong HDMI port was used, or the TV is still running in standard mode instead of extended signal mode.

Another common mistake is confusing a 120 Hz panel with HDMI 2.1 support. Some TVs can drive the panel internally at 120 Hz but only receive 60 Hz via HDMI. Other models advertise gaming features but only offer 4K at 120 Hz on certain ports. Therefore, always refer to the exact specifications for the respective model.

Adapters and switches can also become a bottleneck. An older HDMI switch may only support 4K at 60 Hz, even if the console, TV, and cable could do more. For important gaming connections, a direct cable connection is the simplest and most reliable solution.

The Right Choice Without Tech Stress

You don't need HDMI 2.1 just because the name sounds newer. For movies, streaming, office use, and 4K at 60 Hz, a high-quality Premium High Speed cable is the cost-conscious choice. For PS5, Xbox Series X, fast gaming PCs, and a compatible 120 Hz screen, an Ultra High Speed cable is the appropriate foundation.

Buy the cable based on the device you are using today - with a small glance at the next few years. If you are buying a modern TV or monitor, Ultra High Speed usually offers flexibility. If you simply want to get reliable video and audio to your 4K TV, the appropriate, clearly labeled solution is cheaper and just as stress-free.
