USB-C Charging Power Explained: How Many Watts Can It Handle?

A new 65-watt power supply sounds like significantly faster charging. For a smartphone that only accepts 20 watts, however, it hardly saves any time. The term USB C charging power explains precisely this common misconception: It's not the strongest charger that wins, but the combination of device, power supply, and cable.
If you want to charge your iPhone, Android smartphone, tablet, or accessories appropriately, you don't have to memorize complicated tables. With a few basic rules, you can find a charger that works reliably, protects your devices, and isn't unnecessarily expensive.
What does USB-C charging power mean?
Charging power is specified in watts, or W for short. It describes how much energy a power supply can deliver to a device at most. Simply put: Watts result from volts times amps. For everyday use, the wattage on the power supply, cable, or data sheet is particularly relevant.
A 20-watt power supply can deliver a maximum of 20 watts. However, whether this power actually reaches the phone is decided by the connected device. A smartphone with a maximum of 18 watts will only charge with up to 18 watts, even with a 45-watt or 65-watt power supply. This is not a defect but intentional: the device regulates the intake itself.
The same applies in reverse. A tablet that can use 30 watts will usually still charge with a 10-watt power supply, but much slower. Especially with an almost empty battery, the difference can be noticeable.
USB-C does not automatically mean fast charging
USB-C first describes the shape of the connector. The small, reversible port is now common on many smartphones, tablets, headphones, power banks, and notebooks. However, it does not yet say how fast it charges.
A USB-C cable may only be designed for slow charging, while another cable supports high power. A USB-C power supply can also offer different power levels and charging protocols. Therefore, USB-C alone does not automatically mean fast charging.
For fast and safe charging, USB Power Delivery, often referred to as USB-PD, is often crucial. In this process, the power supply and the device negotiate which voltage and power are appropriate. The charger does not simply continuously deliver the highest wattage. It adapts the energy to the connected device.
Many Android smartphones also use PPS. This technology allows for particularly fine adjustments during the charging process and can improve charging time with compatible devices. For iPhones, a USB-C PD power supply is usually the practical choice if you want to charge faster than with a simple old USB-A power supply.
How many watts do smartphones and tablets need?
For most smartphones, 20 to 30 watts is a sensible range. This allows many current iPhones and Android models to charge quickly without you paying for unnecessarily high power. If you own multiple devices, a 30-watt power supply can often adequately supply your phone and smaller tablets.
There are exceptions for Android models. Some devices support 45 watts, 67 watts, or more. Here, it's worth checking the manufacturer's specifications. Important: Some brands only achieve their advertised maximum speed with a specific charging protocol or the appropriate original cable. Any powerful power supply can then charge, but not at the maximum possible speed.
Tablets often benefit from 30 to 45 watts. A more powerful tablet will still charge with a small smartphone power supply, but it will require more patience. If you charge your smartphone and tablet alternately, a 45-watt power supply is often a good compromise.
For notebooks, 45, 65, or 100 watts are usually sensible, depending on the model. A 20-watt phone charger is insufficient for many laptops or only charges very slowly in standby mode. Therefore, check the recommended minimum power of your notebook.
The cable also matters
A powerful power supply is of little use if the cable limits the performance. Cheaper or older cables sometimes lack information on the supported current. The result: The device charges, but slower than expected. With poor workmanship, cables can also get hot, sit loosely, or break quickly.
For smartphones and normal tablets, a USB-C to USB-C cable with up to 60 watts is sufficient in many cases. It pairs well with chargers of 20, 25, 30, or 45 watts. If the cable is also intended to charge a notebook with 65 or 100 watts, look for a clearly stated higher charging power.
For particularly high performance, a cable with electronic marking may be necessary. This marking tells the charger that the cable is suitable for more power. For a phone, you usually don't have to worry about this. For powerful laptops and docking solutions, however, it is relevant.
Length also plays a role. A very long, thin cable can be less suitable for high power than a high-quality, shorter cable. For nightstands, cars, or desks, not only the length but also solid workmanship and a clear wattage indication are important.
More watts are safe, but not always sensible
Many buyers fear that a 65-watt power supply could damage a smartphone. With a suitable USB-C PD charger, this is usually not the case. The smartphone only requests the power it can handle. So, a 20-watt phone does not suddenly receive 65 watts, just because the power supply would be capable of it.
More power can still be sensible if you buy a power supply for several devices. A 65-watt model can, for example, cover a smartphone, tablet, and, depending on the version, also a notebook. This saves outlets and makes travel luggage more manageable.
The disadvantage: Higher performance usually costs more. In addition, multi-port power supplies often divide their available power. If a 65-watt power supply has two USB-C ports, with a phone and tablet connected simultaneously, 65 watts may no longer be available at each port. If you only charge your smartphone, 20 or 30 watts is usually cheaper and completely sufficient. If you use several devices on the go or want to charge a notebook, 45 or 65 watts offer more reserves.
Why does the phone charge slowly despite a powerful power supply?
The wattage is only part of the equation. If a smartphone charges noticeably slowly, the battery may already be almost full. From about 70 to 80 percent, many devices deliberately reduce the charging speed. The last few percent therefore take significantly longer than the first. This protects the battery and prevents too much heat.
Heat also slows down charging. If the phone is in the sun, in a thick bag, or used for navigation, videos, or games while charging, it reduces its charging power. If it gets very warm, briefly remove the cover, do not place the device on soft blankets, and avoid heavy use while charging.
A dirty USB-C port, a damaged cable, or a weak power supply are other typical causes. If the plug wiggles or charging is constantly interrupted, the cable should be replaced and the port carefully checked. Do not use metal objects - this can damage contacts.
Easily choose the right combination
First, consider what you actually want to charge. For a single smartphone, a USB-C PD power supply with 20 to 30 watts and a well-made USB-C cable is a practical, inexpensive solution. For smartphones and tablets, 30 to 45 watts often suffice. For notebooks, tablets, and phones, a 65-watt power supply is often more flexible.
When choosing, pay attention to three clear specifications: the maximum wattage of the power supply, USB Power Delivery as a supported standard, and the wattage of the cable. For Android devices with particularly fast charging, PPS can also be crucial. If one of these specifications is missing, caution is advised - especially for very cheap offers without recognizable specifications.
A power supply with multiple ports can also be practical if it suits your everyday life. At your desk or when traveling, you can use it to power several devices with one charger. However, for the full charging speed of a single laptop, a single port is sometimes the better choice.
